Leaping Michaels

Multi Landy

Jacoby 2NT after 1M openings [ responses 3M unbalanced & strong 3NT balanced (15+) 4M minimum opener new suit singleton or void jump in a new suit a strong 4 carder ]

Pudding 3NT [responses new suit cue bid]

Mr Mchenry & Roddmann  What we play :-

Crowhurst after 1NT rebids checkback after 2NT rebids.

Bidding balanced hands

12-14 open 1NT then 2C Stayman 2D/H transfer with break responses 2S 5/4 in majors non forcing invitational values. 3 level suits natural game force 2NT invitational to game 3NT to play 4C Gerber for Aces 4NT invitational to 6NT with max 5NT invitational to 7NT

19+ open 2NT or 2C/D then rebid 2NT responses 3C puppet 3D/H transfers 3S 5/4 in majors game force 3NT 4C 4NT 5NT as above.

15-19 open 1 suit then rebid NT  responses C asking bid other suit responses natural 4C Gerber and 4NT/5NT still invitational bids for slam as above.

Systems all on if ops open and we overcall natural NT either (1s) 1NT or (2s) 2NT

Cardings – Reverse attitude and count Italian discards: lead 4th/2nd or top of honour sequences.

After leading 2nd from rubbish whats the next card? Assuming you have no reason to play the top card? It has been said (by Andrew K I think) that the next card should always be odd that’s the original 1st 3rd or 5th. So with 3 that comes out as MUD and gives partner a good chance of distinguishing between an original 3 or 5 card holding.

Benji Acol ( 4 card majors)   Weak 2’s in the majors (5-10) (although 10 hcp is often good enough for a 19/20 rule, one opener)

Ogust responses :-

3c=5-7 hcp 1 honour (Jack is not an honour)

3d=5-7 hcp 2 honours

3h=8-10 hcp 1 honour

3s=8-10 hcp 2 honours

2c=19-20hcp (8PT/single/two suited/balanced) (2c-2nt=19/20) stayman & rst

2nt=21-22 stayman & rst    3S = 5S and 4H

2d=23+(GF) (2d-2nt=23/24, 2d-3nt=25/26) stayman & rst

Stayman And RST over our 1nt/2nt opening bids & 1nt overcall.

*2S=invitational with 5spades 4 hearts , 2NT=11-12hcp over a 1NT opener.

Any interference then bids are natural. RST…super accepting with the right hand, I’m happy with.

DABS, wriggling, Multi Landy, Gambling 3NT

Reopening Xs (especially if you are going to bid 2 of your suit, to protect pard pass)

Separate sheet on doubles

RKCB 03/14

WJO 8-11 n/v, 10-11 vul

Simple overcalls at the 1 level are always 5 cards, but point wise may be as little as 5.

At the 2 level are 10ish depending on shape etc.

Rule of 19 nv 20 vul   but watch the quality of the suit.

Ops X our 1NT wriggle

1NTX is 16-18 normally (sometimes 15) Nearly always for penalties unless we can make more in a vul game contract. (stayman & rst over the X as if we have opened a strong nt)

Michaels (two highest)

UNT at 2nt or 3nt or 4nt level is for 2 lowest unbid suits (5/5 minimum) (obviously @ the 3/4 level must have a good 2 suiter with some HCP)

Neg X to 3Spades

Against opps weak 2’s….X for take out, 2nt as strong (16-18 ish) balanced with 1 and a half or 2 stoppers in bid suit.

Against opps weak 3’s…X is for take out

Our 1NT overcall all systems on so Stayman transfers and wriggle if they double its just so much easier to remember than trying to do something different.

When opener rebids NT for example 1H 1S – 1NT or 1S 2C – 2NT

I like to use checkback/crowhurst that responder’s C bid ie 2C, 3C respectively is looking for major fit.

In the first sequence responder would have either (or both) 3 hearts/ 5 spades so

1H 1S – 1NT 2C! – 2H would be a minimum hand with 5 hearts so we would easily find our 53 heart fit.

In the second responder would have either (or both) 4heats/ 3 spades so

1S 2C – 2NT 3C! – 3S shows opener has 5 spades.

It does mean you can easily find your 8 card major fits the downside is you would not be able to bid 2C to play indeed yes its not always best to be in the major specially at MPS.

Wriggle details

OP doubles our 1NT then XX is any single suited hand  (opener will bid 2C if possible and then PASS any bid at the two level): 2C/D/H show the suit bid and a higher ranking suit may be 44 usually equal length: PASS then is either flat (4333) or happy with 1NTX opener will XX with a 5 card suit which the response is PASS when happy and 2C with a weak flat hand.

How about the ucb?

(1H) 1S (2D) 3S often means little more than I have four spades. The ucb can be used to show spades and some points.

What do we bid with an opening hand (or better) and a fit when partner opens 1Major? Without agreement its usually a case of delayed game raise eg 1S 2D – 2S 4S but of course that can be bid with 2/3 card trump support.

Same question really but what meaning to 1S 2NT OR 1S 3NT?

While we are here 1S (X) 3S is weak? In which case the invitational hand is 1S (X) 2NT.

Which suit to open?

Usually longest! Though have been known to open the higher ranking when 65 and weak.

If 55 then higher ranking unless C and S which is controversial I usually open the S unless weak with better C.

If 44 then usually the lower ranking though (specially at MP) I might open the major if strong. If its H&S then H is mandatory.

If 444 then I open SAYC style ie 1D unless it’s the singleton in which case 1C

Rebids. I will not bypass 1M to bid 1NT. 1D 1H – 1NT denies 4 spades But might to bid a (forcing) 2NT so 1D 1H – 2NT does not deny 4 spades, This has implications for possible Crowhurst/Checkback type bids.
